So here I am, about to graduate college with a B.A. in journalism.
I’m on the cusp of two lives – the one where there is a set path for me, that I know I have to go to school and learn – and the new life, where the world is wide open and scary and full of decisions that I have to make, me and no one else.
I started looking at people around me and wondering what their lives were like, how they got where they are, and what they want. What’s on their bucket list? That list of things that every person wants to do before they ‘kick the bucket’. I realized I couldn’t even name what my best friends or parents really wanted on their lists, aside from some guesses. How could I not know something so important about the people I love?
Well, like any curious journalism major, there was only one way to find out… Interviews!
It’s a good question to ask other people. What’s on your bucket list? It’s not, “what’s your five-year plan?” or, “what do you expect to do with that degree?”. Someone’s list could have anything. From being an amateur magician, to learning Hausa, to having a wedding at Disney World, to making enough money to buy your parents a new house. Anything, anything at all.
And I think it’s really brilliant. How people can have so many different little yearnings in their hearts, whispering desires that weave how their paths in life take shape. So, I want to uncover the brilliant buckets around me and share them here. It’s about curiosity, and connection, and sonder, “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”
Let’s find some buckets.
